Ellen Franconi, Ph.D.



Ellen provides specialized technical expertise to energy efficient new construction and retrofit building projects. Her contributions focus on promoting an integrated design process, conducting building simulation modeling, benchmarking, and measuring and verifying predicted performance.

  • Building Simulation Training and Wiki Development: Developing training materials for the International Building Performance Simulation Association
  • IMF HQ1 Renovation: Working with the Planning Team to evaluate integrated design opportunities and develop the scope of work for the HQ1 renovation
  • New Smithsonian Museum: Advising the design team regarding the energy efficiency potential of three early concept designs.
  • U.S. Grocery Chain (confidential): Supporting the redesign of mechanical and refrigeration systems in a new prototype store to achieve the next level of energy efficiency.


Ellen brings over twenty years of experience in systems engineering and building energy analysis. She has worked for ten years in research and twelve years in the private sector. Her research work at the Solar Energy Research Institute included data collection and modeling that led to the development of effective energy conservation measures for mobile homes. At Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, she completed modeling for a bottom-up study that involved completing over 3000 DOE-2 runs to characterize energy use and savings potential for the U.S. commercial building sector.

At Schiller Associates and Nexant, she applied her modeling skills to develop measurement and verification procedures to support utility demand-side management programs. She designed and managed a new Recommissioning Program for a utility client. At Architectural Energy Corporation, she led a team of energy analysts to provide design assistance services for over 50 commercial new construction projects.
